The Internet is Changing the Cremation Urn Supply Business
Bellingham, WA (PRWEB) May 4, 2007 -- Memorial-Urns.com wants to eliminate the 2nd tier middlemen in the cremation urn industry. According to Vaughn Balchunas, owner of Memorial-Urns.com, the funeral industry middlemen often add 100% or more to the price of an urn before they sell it to a funeral home. The funeral home then adds another two or three hundred percent to the wholesale price. "These middlemen, or aggregators as they are often called, do nothing more than find cremation urn manufacturers and pass the order from the funeral home on to the manufacturer, and take their cut. There is no reason in today's internet age for these middlemen to exist," says Balchunas.
The reason they exist is because the funeral homes are a convenient market; but what about the growing direct to consumer internet market? The funeral homes prefer the aggregators because they can quickly locate new products and resell them to their grieving customers. However, because of the internet, many people can now buy urns online for much lower than the funeral homes sell them. The funeral industry has tried to combat the competition by forcing the aggregators to not sell to direct-to-consumer online retailers like Memorial Urns.
Until recently, people who shopped for personalized memorial urns had limited choices. Furthermore, they had to pay exorbitant prices for anything other than the most basic urns. Left without a viable alternative, most people settled for cheaper, standardized cremation urns. Bereaved pet owners themselves, Vaughn and Cindy Balchunas of the website Memorial-Urns.com wanted to reverse the steep prices and limited selections that are the norm in the cremation urn industry. By going directly to the manufacturers, independent artisans and skilled craftsmen, Memorial-Urns.com is helping grieving people access a much wider selection than they would typically find at their crematory or funeral home, and at better prices.
"On average, we add a new direct supplier every week. So there are a lot of new items coming in all the time. This way, we can offer excellent products that meet the needs of a lot of different people," says Balchunas. Providing customers with a wide online selection of cremation urns and keepsakes bought directly from artisans has slashed the prices of cremation urns by 40% to 80%.
